Wayne Clasper

Wayne the Wood Turner

At the end of 1986 I finished 12 years in the REME Corps of the Army, as a mechanic. I was sent on a resettlement course, a return to civvy street course, and I picked an introduction to the building trade because I thought it would come in handy having just bought an old cottage in Dumfries and Galloway. While on this course I noticed a lathe and started having a play on it. That was me hooked on woodturning, and I haven’t stopped since. Shortly afterwards I bought my first lathe from an elderly man in Gatehouse of Fleet. I am mostly self-taught although I did attend two training sessions, one with Maurice Mullins a turner in Cumbria, and the other at Craft Supplies in Derbyshire. Over the years I have built up my wood turning skills, the equipment to produce my pieces and my reputation as an accomplished turner. I embrace all aspects of turning, including the use of Resin. I particularly like to use colours and different texturing techniques in my work I produce videos of my turning on You Tube, I am on Facebook and Instagram, and my wood pieces are available on Esty, and in Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and at Mugdock Makkers. When I am not turning for myself or to produce stock for my outlets, I can be found giving tuition sessions, demonstrations or attending Country and Christmas Fairs, at venues such as Drumlanrig Castle.
